Skaters, I'm doiong research on skateboard safety for an assignment. I know nothing about skateboarding, except for what I saw on scarred. So, if theres anybody out there that can give me their opinion on skateboarding, I'd appreciate it.

I'm trying to find out why you skateboard. Is it just to go fast? How do you have the guts to even try those tricks? Is getting ionjured a badge of honor like in football or rugby or what?

What are some of the common injuries in this sport? Have injuries made somebody you know quit skateboarding alltogether?

Who if anybody could get you to slow down, or be safer while skating? (The only person I know are Tony Hawk.)

Any help is appreciated, Ed

Re: To all the skaters

Ed, I know your assignment was probably due a long time ago, but I'll answer your questions anyway. >I'm trying to find out why you skateboard. Is it >just to go fast? How do you have the guts to even >try those tricks? Is getting ionjured a badge of >honor like in football or rugby or what? I don't skateboard to go fast. I don't even like going fast. My reasons are: 1) it's fun! 2) mastering new tricks is challenging and rewarding 3) the skater community: no matter where you go, other skaters will almost always welcome you as "one of their own". I've known some skaters who view their injuries as badges of courage. Me, I just like to avoid getting injured if at all possible. >What are some of the common injuries in this >sport? Have injuries made somebody you know quit >skateboarding alltogether? For street skating, sprains (ankles, knees, and wrists) are very common. Broken bones not super common, but it does happen (esp feet, ankles, and wrists). Big bruises and scrapes on shins, knees, and hands happen all the time. >Who if anybody could get you to slow down, or be >safer while skating? (The only person I know are >Tony Hawk.) When I'm skating with someone who gets a serious injury, it sometimes makes me think twice about my safety. But nothing a pro skater says would cause me to become more safe.
